Que Syrah, Syrah!

I had a wonderful wine in my bag today, the St. Cosme Cotes du Rhone 2010.  The wine is deep violet in color, and exhibits aromas of smoked meats and black fruits.  I tasted the wine with several customers, and almost everyone loved and/or bought the wine.  The last customer of the day, however, is where the humor (or sarcasm in my case), came into play.

Me:  (Pouring the wine)  This is a new wine that we just received from the Cotes du Rhone.  It is almost 100% Syrah.

Customer:  Wow, look at that color!

Me: Exactly!  It is gorgeous!

Customer:  It has a very meaty, smoky nose.  The wine is rich and full; very easy to drink.

Me:  I agree – it is from one of the top producers in Gigondas, and a steal at this price.

At this point, a customer pipes up and asks for a taste.  She loves it and wants to buy some, but, of course, it is yet to be on the shelf at the store.  I tell her that it will be in stock next week.

Me: (to the buyer) So what wines do you need (of course NEED- they need all of my wines) for this week?

Customer:  California PN, Napa Cab etc. blah blah blah

Me:  But what about the Cotes du Rhone?  You loved it and you so did your customer!

Customer:  I just don’t have much demand for Cotes du Rhone at my store.

Me: OK. Well, how about a new Syrah that I just picked up that has 90 points from Wine Spectator and will retail around $15.00?

Customer: Great!  I’ll take a case!

Me: Fantastic!  I will send you a case of this Cotes du Rhone tomorrow! (I guess I will be printing a shelf talker to help the buyer out!)

The end of summer!

Despite the weather forecast of a high temperature of 92 degrees today, I officially declare summer to be over.  Why, you ask?  Well, maybe it’s because I am sick and tired of pulling a 30 pound wine bag around in 95+ degree temparatures.  Or trying to keep my wines at the proper tasting temperature by constantly adding ice packs, frozen water bottles etc. that now increase the weight of my bag to around 50 pounds!  Maybe its getting in and out of the car 20 times a day, so the air conditioner never gets quite cold enough.

Does the poor attitude make my readers happy that I didn’t post anything all summer?!?  I pretty much dragged myself home at the end of most days and tried to soak up some air conditioning.  I promise to be more positive when the temperature drops below 90 (well, maybe…).  So welcome fall, football season, cooler temps and increased wine sales.  I’m ready!!

Great wine day!

Its finally slightly cooler outside, only 88, so I am showing some amazing reds today. In the wine bag : Sass Willamette Pinot Noir, Corvidae the keeper Syrah and Lenore Cab Franc, Gemtree uncut Shiraz and Pozzan back barn Zinfandel! And the wines are staying cool thanks to 30 minutes in the frig and a great wine bag. Join me at Vinos, its my last stop of the day!

What is Terroir?

Have you heard of the term terroir?  Do you know what it means in relation to wine?  Without consulting Wikipedia, here is my definition:  Terroir:  the essence of the place where grapes are grown; the sense of place that one tastes in wines from a specific region.  Let’s make it simple, wine is made from grapes grown in soil and exhibits flavor characteristics from that soil, climate and man-made winemaking techniques.  For me, the best wines are from regions and years where the conditions are so perfect, that wine makers merely need to stand back and, “Don’t mess it up.”  Here are some of my favorite winemaking regions that express terroir:

Burgundy – how can vineyards that are just yards apart taste worlds apart?  Apparently, the monks got it right when they designated the parcels!  My faves:  Romanee-Conti and Joseph Drouhin.

South Africa – I am on a huge south African wine kick right now.  Founded by the Dutch, S. Africa has come a long way since Apartheid.  Look for Chenin Blancs and Bordeaux blends that are just as good as their French colleagues, and less than half the price!  Go to wineries:  Raats, Rustenberg, Indaba and Mulderbosch.

Argentina – love it! love it!  Is there really any bad wine from this country??  Not the ones that I am drinking anyway!  Priced from $10 to $30 these wines are a bargain!  While known for Malbec, there are some terrific blends and other varietals as well.  Go to producers:  Bodega Benegas, and Bodega Noemia.
